Detective
The Detective Division is the criminal investigative component of the Police Department which investigates crimes that occur within the boundaries of the Borough of Paramus. Commanded by Captain Kevin Smith, detectives assigned within the division include personnel trained in the investigation of hostage negotiation, crime scene processing, white collar crime, robberies, burglaries, missing persons, juvenile laws, theft, auto theft, arsons, assault, domestic violence, and intelligence gathering and dissemination.
To accomplish its mission, the division relies on a partnership not only with the uniformed officers assigned to the Paramus Police Department, but also with the citizens it serves.
Members of the Detective Division are assigned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau, Juvenile Bureau, and Bureau of Criminal Identification. Detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau primarily investigate offenses committed by persons 18 and over, while detectives in the Juvenile Bureau specialize in matters involving persons under the age of 18. Detectives assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Identification specialize in crime scene processing, while also processing applications for firearms permits, liquor licenses, gold buyers, and peddlers.
The Paramus Detective Division also coordinates and hosts monthly meetings of the Bergen County Northeast Detective Group. The Paramus Detective Division provides its services twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
