Professional Standards

The goal of the Paramus Police Department is to provide the community with the finest and most efficient police services available. A positive relationship between the community and the police department, fostered by trust and confidence, is essential.

The responsibility of providing and maintaining a system that investigates and addresses the public’s complaints rests upon the Office of the Chief of Police. The Office of Professional Standards reports directly to the Chief of Police.

The primary mission of the Office of Professional Standards is to ensure that the Departments employees meet the highest standards of integrity and ethical performance. The Office is charged with administering policy management, internal affairs, and risk analysis processes for the Paramus Police Department.

The policy management system serves as the foundation for effective discipline. A clearly defined policy management system is designed to move the organization toward its stated goals and set the standard for acceptable performance. The system must incorporate a mechanism for the distribution of rules and regulations, policies and procedures, and provide for periodic review and revision as necessary.

Internal Affairs provides for the prompt and objective investigation and disposition of citizen complaints regarding the conduct and job performance of employees of the Paramus Police Department. Internal affairs will not only subject personnel to corrective action when wrong-doing or inappropriate conduct is determined, but will also serve to vindicate personnel when duties are properly and reasonably performed.

The goal of risk analysis is to ensure liability control through routine critical analysis of individual and organizational performances relative to management oversight, employee conduct, use of force, pursuits, traffic collisions, and the results of civil litigation in order to identify liability issues and take corrective action. When liability issues are identified appropriate corrective action is initiated. Examples of corrective action include counseling, training, discipline, and/or modifications to existing policy and procedures.
